Why I am Walking Away

I got taken from a guy I hardly knew in another state. I was on medication that I wasn't thinking straight on - I would have never done this in my right frame of mind. I am on a fixed income - SSI and cannot afford to pay for my credit card he jacked up. He ended up spending about 5 thou. I kept the receipts but I don't know what I can possibly do. He's already moved on to the next woman and shut me out of his life after saying he couldn't afford to pay me. Please help I am desperate.

What To Do First

You should call the police because it sounds like you may have been the victim of a crime. Never give anybody your financial information again. You should also seek credit counseling in your city. They can help you work with the creditors to straighten some of the bills out. The sooner you document what happened, the better chance you have of protecting yourself and reducing the damage.

Document The Fraud

Keep every receipt, message, statement, and detail you have about the trip and the charges. Ask your card issuer how to dispute the charges and whether they can place a fraud note on the account while they review it. If the bill was created through deception or unauthorized use, you need a paper trail that shows what happened and when.

Protect Yourself Going Forward

Since you’re on SSI, ask a nonprofit credit counseling agency about hardship options, repayment plans, and any local protections for people on fixed incomes. Also, tell your doctor or pharmacist that the medication affected your judgment so it can be documented in your medical record. You are not the first person to be exploited while vulnerable, and you do not have to solve this alone.
